Cyndi Lauper stumbled through her rendition of the national anthem on Saturday (10.11.2011) after mistakenly singing the wrong lyrics.
The 58-year-old singer was performing Star Spangled banner at the U.S. Open on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the attacks when she sang "O'er the ramparts we watched as our flag was still streaming" rather than O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming." The star later apologised on Twitter saying that the occasion got to her "Whew, I just did the anthem for the US open. It was an awesome experience. I got choked up in the middle remembering 9/11..The moon shone done on us and I tried to say a prayer at the same time.. I hope I didn't mess up too bad. I wanted it to be comforting. " This is not the first time a singer has botched the national anthem, Christina Aguilera made the exact same mistaken earlier this year at the Super Bowl.
Lauper was born in New York City and released her debut album in 1983, entitled She's So Unusual and became the first female singer to have four top-five singles from the same album. She has since released a further ten albums selling 30 million records worldwide. As well as a music career she has also appeared in several movies and television series' including 30 Rock and Gossip Girl.
